The EU and New Zealand have today agreed in principle on a comprehensive trade agreement. The agreement comes at a crucial time when the value of open, rule-based trade is increasingly questioned and trade policy is under pressure to deliver on a variety of issues reaching far beyond traditional market access considerations, including fostering sustainable food systems. By concluding this far-reaching FTA with a like-minded partner, European trade policy takes another step in the right direction. New Zealand is also one of the few countries having strong historical ties and shared values with the EU, with which no trade agreement is in place to date.
